Niki Caro - Writer/Director: Whale Rider, Vintner's Luck

I first worked with Joan Scheckel when she acted as script consultant on WHALE RIDER.  We did not meet face to face for many months as I was in New Zealand, but during that time the script grew deeper and stronger under her influence. She brings insight and clarity to every project she works on.  She has a deep understanding of the architecture of a story and is as rigorous with structure as she is with character.  She is both challenging and caring and is an invaluable partner on any project. Working with her is thrilling and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

What is it?

Joan is available to Write, Co-Write, Script Doctor, or Consult on screenplays.  The First Step is the Initial Consultation Series. Once you've done that, we can design writing support that best suits the needs of your project.

WHO GOES?

Writing Consultation is open to Professional Filmmakers.  Ongoing sessions are held with the Writer, Director and/or Producer.

WHAT DOES IT COVER?

Writing Consultation supports the foundation of your film by investigating the structural integrity of your screenplay in relationship to its theme. Session time is tailored for each project. It includes work to:

  • Define the emotional logic for key characters
  • Strengthen the journey and story structure
  • Refine character, relationships, world and action
  • Strengthen dialogue
  • Integrate visual style
  • Create rhythm, pacing and flow
  • Unleash the emotional authenticity at the heart of the story

WHEN, WHERE, HOW MUCH?

Joan writes screenplays and conducts Writing Consultations periodically throughout the year. She works in Los Angeles, New York and worldwide on Skype.  Fees and schedule are negotiated on a case by case basis.  Please contact us for details.
