FILMMAKING 2

Alison Maclean - Director: Jesus' Son, Crush

"Joan Scheckel has developed her own unique method - though I hesitate to call it that because it's constantly evolving - based on years of acting training and her many collaborations with writers, directors, actors and students.  She thinks like an artist, but she's rigorous - coaxing people to go beyond what they already know. She's also playful (which is important) and her perceptions verge on the psychic.  I've worked with Joan several times, both in a Directing class and one-to-one doing in-depth script analysis work, and she continues to challenge and inspire me."

What is it?

Filmmaking 2 is the second tier in Joan's series of Directing Workshops. Filmmaking 1 is the prerequisite for Filmmaking 2.

Who Goes?

Filmmaking 2 is designed for maximum individual attention and hands-on participation.  It is limited to 7-10 participants and is open to all Filmmaking Professionals who have completed Filmmaking 1:

  • Directors
  • Writers
  • Actors
  • Producers
  • Cinematographers
  • Editors
  • Production Designers

Please see Films, Community and Quotes for Artists Joan has worked with and their thoughts.

What Does it Cover?

The focus is on crafting the emotional arc of the entire movie. Directors put three key scenes on their feet in order to internalize the principles of blocking, pacing, rhythm, performance, story structure, journey, tone, and visual style.
  • Technique:
Hone your script breakdown skills, use action to block quickly and organically. Investigate the emotional backbone of your movie. Learn tools to bring clear pace, rhythm, and musicality to the whole.
  • Rehearsal/Shoot:
Choose 3 scenes from your film to track the overall emotional journey of the movie. The scenes will be prepped, rehearsed, and shot in class giving the director three times as much hands-on work as in Filmmaking 1.

Where, When, How Much?

The lab meets 3 times a week: 1 weekday evening and Saturday and Sunday days. There are 15 sessions of 4-8 hours each.  The cities, dates, and costs for the lab vary. Please see FAQs, Calendar and contact us for details.
